KTCU Music n stuff

Good Friday afternoon!  Hope you had a great week.  Well, it's another edition of my what's going on with the music at KTCU blog.

I do want to ask for your feedback on what you hear on KTCU FM 88.7.  Leave me a message here.  What you do/don't like, want to hear more of this, or less of that?  We can't please everyone, but we're always looking to evolve.  And while you're at it, please tell a friend.  And visit our http://www.facebook.com/ktcu#!/ktcufm88.7 page too.  We need all the "likes" we can get! :)

I just added a song to our playlist (She'd Rather Forgive Him) by the Fort Worth band "Keeper of the Plains."  Their debut CD is just now being finalized and should be out by the end of the month.  I had to google their name to figure out where he came from, but then realizing lead-singer Michael Gutierrez is from Kansas, it made sense!  (name comes from the 44 foot Indian statue in Wichita).

Lead-singer Michael Gutierrez has been playing music for some time, in bands around Wichita, solo stuff and now Keeper of the Plains.  He teams up with TCU-grad Trevor Taylor (guitar) and Arlington's Chad Lilly (bass).  You can find samples of their music on line (http://www.reverbnation.com/keeperoftheplains) and again look for their CD later this summer.

ANOTHER great CD that got stuck under a pile of music on my desk until last week, is American Girls by K Phillips.  He's a keyboard player who toured quite a bit with Brandon Jenkins before heading into the studio to record American Girls.  K wrote all 10 songs on the disc...he plays keyboard, piano, harmonica, organ and guitar and is backed by some stellar musicians.  His music is anything-but the cookie-cutter Texas, or alt-country, or Red Dirt.  Here's a couple of videos to check out
http://www.kphillipsmusic.com/kpm/?page_id=182.  You'll hear "You don't Hafta" and "Kat's Song" both on KTCU.

Wish I could say I like it...Earl Dibbles, Jr.  "The Country Boy Song."  Granger Smith's alter-ego is... just not for me.

A couple of records that I do recommend you listen to, and I probably should have written this before July 4th.  Brandon Rhyder and Aaron Watson both have outstanding singles out.  Brandon's Black & White, like the publicity piece points out, sounds like it was cut from the headlines.  A story about struggle and a son going off to the military.  All proceeds from the sale of the record will benefit the Boot Campaign (http://www.bootcampaign.com/) which assists our miliary vets.  Aaron Watson's Raise Your Bottle is a salute to all of who have served our country.  He delivers.  Check out the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAGnTFjIxTM&noredirect=1 and Raise Your Bottle!  Job well done.

Well, it's Friday and I'm hoping you have a wonderful weekend.  I'll see you on the radio Monday morning at 6am on FM 88.7 KTCU.

  1. Hey, I heard that New Orleans show is coming back. How about a little love for the jazz and funk fans of KTCU?

  2. I wanted to reach out personally and thank you guys for being so supportive of my Cracked Open album. I'd love to do some shows in Texas sometime as I lived in San Antonio years ago and still have family there. So Ft Worth does cross my mind...fairly often;-) Keep up the good work!!!
